Rectangle / Circle

Those two tools enable you to draw a rectangular shape or a circular shape on the selected layer. The shape can be of any color and any size. You may even render the stroke of the shape, or fill the shape with a gradient.

You may access those tools from the following commands:

Tool barMenu barShortcuts
Drawing > RectR
Drawing > CircleC

How to use

Rect and Circle work exactly the same way. The only difference is of course the shape it will draw.

To use this tool, simply select one layer. Then click on your character where you want the shape to begin. Hold down and move the cursor until you reach the desired opposite corner of the shape. Then release.

You may control the dimension of the shape by holding the Shift key while drawing. This will draw a perfect square (and not a rectangle) or a perfect circle (and not an ellipse) depending on the selected shape. The shape starting corner and the shape dimension are displayed on the bottom left corner of the window, as your are drawing it.

Note that if you click with the right mouse button (instead of the left mouse button), you will draw with the second color (i.e. if the current color is the primary color, you will then fill up with the secondary color, and vice versa).

To draw only the stroke, or to fill the shape with a gradient, refer to the "Rect/Circle settings" section below.

Area of effect

These tools operate either within selected frames or selected pixels, depending on the current selection mode. This means that if some frames are selected (and that you are in the frame selection mode), you will not be able to draw pixels that don't lie in a selected frame. The same goes for the pixel selection mode: you will not be able to draw pixels that are not selected.

You may change the selection mode while using those tools: the rightmost toolbar button enables to toggle between the selection modes. Select or to draw a shape within the selected frames, and or to draw a shape within the selected pixels.

Note that if the selection is empty, the shape is free to draw where you want.

Rect/Circle settings

Upon selecting the tool, a new toolbar shall appear. This toolbar enables you to change the shape settings.

  • Drawing mode defines what part of the shape to draw.
    • Fill shape: This will draw and fill up the shape, without drawing its stroke.
    • Draw shape's stroke only: This will only draw the shape's stroke, without filling the shape.
    • Draw shape and its stroke: This will draw both the shape and its stroke.
  • Filling mode: defines how to fill the shape or the stroke.
    • Single color: The shape will be filled with a single color (i.e. the current color).
    • Gradient: The shape will be filled with a color gradient. Click on Edit gradient to edit and choose the gradient to use. See also Gradient editor.
  • Outline width: defines the width of the stroke (if any), in pixels.
  • Composition mode defines how to deal with a non-opaque shape.
    • Normal blending: This will blend the color of the character with the color of the shape.
    • Overwrite: This will replace the color of the character by the color of the shape.
  • Render hint defines how to render the shape
    • Anti-aliasing enabled: This will draw a smooth shape.
    • Anti-aliasing disabled: This will draw a shape which won't be smoothed.
  • Edit gradient: Opens the gradient editor. The icon of the button displays the current gradient.

Tip: if you are in frame selection mode, and several frames are selected, you may draw the same shape in several frames at once! Simply hold Ctrl while drawing the shape. The shape will be drawn on every selected frame!

Filling colors

Those tools offer numerous options and different ways to draw and fill the shape. In this section we detail how Game Character Hub will pick up the colors or the gradient to render the shape.

  • If the Filling mode is Single color:
    • and the Drawing mode is Fill shape: The shape will be rendered without its stroke, and filled with the current color as selected in the Colors window. If you draw the shape with the right mouse button instead, then the second color will be used.
    • and the Drawing mode is Draw shape's stroke only: The stroke will be drawn with the current color as selected in the Colors window. If you draw the shape with the right mouse button instead, then the second color will be used.
    • and the Drawing mode is Draw shape and its stroke: The shape stroke will be filled with the current color as selected in the Colors window, and the stroke will be drawn with the second color. If you draw the shape with the right mouse button instead, then the second color will be used to fill the shape, and the current color will be used to draw the stroke.
  • If the Filling mode is Gradient:
    • and the Drawing mode is Fill shape: The shape will be filled with the selected gradient (selected from the Edit gradient button).
    • and the Drawing mode is Draw shape's stroke only: The stroke will be drawn with the selected gradient (selected from the Edit gradient button).
    • and the Drawing mode is Draw shape and its stroke: The shape will be filled with the selected gradient (selected from the Edit gradient button). The stroke will be drawn with the second color (unless you drew with the right mouse button, in which case the stroke will be drawn with the current color).
